Cheongdam-dong Alice (Hangul: 청담동 앨리스; Hanja: 清潭洞愛麗絲; RR: Cheongdamdong Aelliseu) is a 2012 South Korean romantic comedy television series, starring Moon Geun-young, Park Si-hoo, So Yi-hyun and Kim Ji-seok. It is about a hardworking, aspiring designer who struggles to fit in the ritzy, expensive, image-conscious, and fashion-forward world of Cheongdam-dong, whose life is changed by the CEO of a multinational distribution company of luxury goods, played by Moon and Park respectively.

It aired on Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS) from December 1, 2012 to January 27, 2013 on Saturdays and Sundays at 21:55 for 16 episodes.

Plot

Han Se-kyung's (Moon Geun-young) personal motto is "L'effort est ma force (Hard work is my strength)" and she battles all sorts of hardships with an optimistic attitude. She enters every design contest she can attend and finally gets hired at her dream job at GN Fashion, an apparel company; only to find that she's the glorified errand girl for the president's wife, Seo Yoon-joo (So Yi-hyun), who was her high school classmate and rival. Yoon-joo was a worse student than Se-kyung, and now determined to make her life miserable.
So Se-kyung makes up her mind to marry a rich man and embarks on the project to become a "Cheongdam-dong daughter-in-law," an upscale, fashionable young lady who marries the social upper crust in Cheongdam-dong (a small, insular, and particularly posh neighborhood in Seoul's Gangnam District). She meets Jean Thierry Cha (Park Si-hoo), the youngest CEO in the luxury-brand market, who is an independent, successful but petty-minded businessman. However he harbours a dark side to him, by getting back at people whom he thinks have hurt him; and holds a strong enmity toward women obsessed with luxury-brand products and those who marry for money.
The title is a word play on Alice in Wonderland, and refers to the heroine's fish-out-of-water status in said neighborhood, as she navigates the strange new world of designer clothes, gossip and consumerism. Se-kyung agrees to enter into a marriage, but what ensues is a "warm and cheerful story of finding real happiness."

Production

Loosely based on the chick lit novel Cheongdam-dong Audrey by Lee Hye-kyung, the series is written by Kim Ji-woon and Kim Jin-hee, who also wrote historical dramas Queen Seondeok for MBC in 2009; and Deep Rooted Tree on SBS in 2012. The writters, in the drama wanted portray the splendor and vanity of the so-called "Beverly Hills of Seoul" realistically, saying "We will question the terms of endearment through the youths living the life of dreams. We hope the viewers will ask themselves: Is wealth everything we need? Are we happy now?".
This marks Moon's first television series in two years since Mary Stayed Out All Night in 2010, and Park's return to the small screen since historical drama The Princess' Man in 2011. This also marks the acting debut of girl group AOA member Shin Hye-jeong as Moon's younger sister, Han Se-jin.
